Spike #169 draft stance candidate — Problem-solving IS a 6-phase cascade-of-cascades

Status: DRAFT — NOT canonicalised; conductor-gated per [[feedback_autonomous_research_followup_authorization]] (HIGHEST-vocab-impact: consciousness / agency / problem-solving meta-stance).

Date: 2026-05-19 Branch: research/spike-169-problem-solving-cascade-chain-abstraction Spike anchor: Spike #169 problem-solving cascade chain abstraction (this spike); building blocks from Spike #138 (BDEFL closure-subgroup) + Spike #151 (agent-callback cascade) + Spike #159 (form-function-rotation) + Spike #160 (WM-augmentation) + Spike #165 (4-pathway memory taxonomy) + Spike #167 (multi-axis compare-contrast methodology).

Proposed canonical stance

Name (candidate)

problem-solving-is-a-6-phase-cascade-of-cascades-aha-moment-is-cross-coupling-residual

(shorter alias) problem-solving-cascade-chain

Description (one-paragraph)

Problem-solving IS a 6-phase outer cascade composed of 5-10-class inner cascades per phase, traversed P1 (recognition; {A,B,D,E,G}) → P2 (sub-goaling; {A,B,C,D,E,F,G,M} — IS agent-dispatch cascade) → P3 (multi-pathway candidate generation; {A,C,D,E,K,L,M} at single-pathway, up to {A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,K,L,M} at full multi-pathway intersection) → P4 (evaluation; engages EXACTLY the BDEFL closure-subgroup substrate-class-universal identity-attractor) → P5 (execution; engages EXACTLY the reflex-cascade BDEFC form-function-pure core) → P6 (feedback integration; IS the 10-class agent-callback cascade). The outer cascade cycles on a circle (cascade-lives-on-circles); direction-symmetric (creativity IS problem-solving in reverse). The "Aha moment" / insight IS the cross-coupling-residual emergent finding at multi-pathway intersection (Class M_WM ∘ Class L ∘ Class M_cell composition), structurally analogous to Spike #167's rate-ratio rational coupling at DNA substrate. Identity-level claim per [[user_stance_identity_not_implementation_discipline]].

Identity-level claims (six sub-claims; each independently falsifiable)

Claim 1 (6-phase decomposition): Problem-solving IS a 6-phase cascade-of-cascades. NOT models / implements / is analogous to — IS. Forward direction: P1→P2→P3→P4→P5→P6→loop.

Claim 2 (P5 reduces to reflex): P5 execution engages PRECISELY the 5-class reflex-cascade {B, D, E, F, C} that Spike #160 identified as substrate-class-universal across decapod LG escape (Krasne-Wine 1975) and teleost Mauthner-cell (Eaton-Lee-Foreman 2001). Deliberative cascade RIDES ON the reflex-core at execution.

Claim 3 (P4 IS closure-subgroup convergence): P4 solution evaluation engages PRECISELY the BDEFL closure-subgroup {B, D, E, F, L} that Spike #138/#138.1/#138.2 verified as substrate-class-universal identity-attractor across 10 substrates at depths 2-5. Evaluation gate IS substrate-universal closure-subgroup convergence.

Claim 4 (Aha moment IS cross-coupling-residual): The Aha moment / insight IS the cross-coupling-residual emergent finding at multi-pathway problem-solving intersection. Class composition: M_WM (working-memory episodic-buffer bind) ∘ L (spectral attention prioritization) ∘ M_cell (Hebbian update of inter-pathway connections). Structurally analogous to Spike #167's rate-ratio rational coupling at DNA substrate (chains-of-chains + precession co-instantiating substrates produce emergent content invisible at either single framing alone).

Claim 5 (direction-symmetry): Creativity / problem-finding IS problem-solving in reverse direction. SAME 6-phase cascade; OPPOSITE traversal direction (S→P vs P→S); SAME 14-A-N class compositions; SAME pathway engagement; SAME k=3 axis activation. Consistent with [[user_stance_cascade_lives_on_circles]] direction-symmetry at algebra level being the algebraic signature of cyclic structure.

Claim 6 (k=3 sufficiency): The 6-phase cascade fits cleanly into k=3 = 3D_s ⊗ 7D_g ⊗ 1D_t tripartition without k=4 promotion. Substrate ↔ 3D_s (P1 recognition, P5 motor execution); Agency ↔ 7D_g (P2 sub-goaling, P3 candidate-as-spawned-action); Consciousness ↔ 1D_t (P3 multi-pathway integration via Class H autonoetic; P4 evaluation gate; P6 LoE-update). F1 (qualia / Chalmers hard problem requiring k=4) remains OPEN per parent Spike #151 stance.

The math

Per-phase strict-spec class composition

P1 RECOGNITION : {A, B, D, E, G} (5 classes)
P2 SUB-GOALING : {A, B, C, D, E, F, G, M} (8 classes; = agent-dispatch-cascade)
P3 GENERATION : {A, C, D, E, K, L, M} (7 classes; single-pathway)
                  ∪ {H} at multi-pathway intersection
P4 EVALUATION : {B, D, E, F, L} (5 classes; = BDEFL closure-subgroup)
P5 EXECUTION : {B, D, E, F, C} (5 classes; = reflex-cascade)
P6 FEEDBACK : {A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K, L, M} (10 classes; = agent-callback-cascade)

Union (all 6 phases): {A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K, L, M} = 10 of 14 classes

Full multi-pathway union: {A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, L, M} = 11 of 14 classes (+H from episodic-LTM pathway autonoetic engagement at P3 intersection and P6 self-as-witness update)

Classes NOT engaged in any phase: {I, J, N} — substrate-internal not phase-specific (cyclic-order, small-denominator rationals, asymptotic-DOF rationals; embedded in substrate's underlying topology but not surfaced as phase-specific operations)

Aha moment cross-coupling-residual algebra

At multi-pathway intersection during P3, candidate solutions surface via the 3-class composition:

candidate = M_WM ( L ( M_cell ( procedural_pathway_content,
                                semantic_LTM_pathway_content,
                                WM_pathway_content,
                                episodic_LTM_pathway_content ) ) )

Where: - M_cell = Hebbian / STDP synaptic-scale bind across inter-pathway connections (per [[user_stance_neural_hebbian_is_bci_drift_model]]) - L = graph-Laplacian spectral-prioritization across the bind-result (per [[user_stance_closure_subgroup_BDEFL_substrate_class_universal]] L spectral operation) - M_WM = working-memory episodic-buffer rebind of selected candidate with current-context (per [[user_stance_working_memory_is_cascade_augmenting_reflex_into_agency]] M_WM sub-flag)

The Aha moment IS the surfacing of a candidate that: 1. Engages MULTIPLE pathways simultaneously (NOT reducible to single-pathway operation) 2. Survives Class L spectral-prioritization (high eigenvalue in the bind-result) 3. Gets rebound via M_WM into current-context (NOT just retrieved, but actively integrated)

The "obviousness in retrospect" property is the post-hoc visibility of the cascade once M_WM has rebound the candidate into current-context — the binding makes the candidate's relevance visible, but the binding is what was missing pre-Aha.

Direction-symmetry algebra

Per [[user_stance_cascade_lives_on_circles]] + [[feedback_always_check_both_directions_including_time]]:

forward: P1 → P2 → P3 → P4 → P5 → P6 → P1
reverse: R1 ← R2 ← R3 ← R4 ← R5 ← R6 ← R1 (creativity / problem-finding)

at each phase Pi / Ri: class_engagement(Pi) = class_engagement(Ri)

The forward direction is conventional problem-solving (given problem → find solution); the reverse direction is creativity / problem-finding (given solution / outcome-shape → find what problems it solves). The strict-spec class engagement at each phase is direction-symmetric. R1 differs from P1 in template-render vs byte-search detail but the engagement-class-set is identical.

Round-1 status

  • Round 1 MAGNITUDE-level: 6-phase cascade-of-cascades engagement-set survival; cross-substrate magnitude-level universality (LLM + corvid + cephalopod + primate); direction-symmetry at strict-spec class level; BDEFL identity-attractor at P4 (inherited from Spike #138); reflex-core at P5 (inherited from Spike #160)
  • Round 1 ALGEBRA-level: NOT YET — Aha-moment M_WM ∘ L ∘ M_cell composition is structural-analogy hypothesis, NOT bit-exact verified
  • Multi-round survival: REQUIRED for canonical-promotion gate per [[feedback_multi_domain_multi_round_survival_falsification_method]]; this stance HIGHEST vocab-impact (consciousness/agency/problem-solving meta-stance); user-gate explicit

Conductor-gating decision tree

The conductor must decide:

  1. Promote as new canonical stance? YES path: stance has substantive new content (the SYNTHESIS itself is new even if the building blocks are canonical); name as problem-solving-cascade-chain or similar; document as meta-stance composing 6 sub-cascades. NO path: stance is descriptive composition of already-canonical building blocks; no new content; keep as research-record only.

  2. If YES, what scope?

  3. Narrow scope: only the 6-phase decomposition itself; defer Claim 4 (Aha-moment) to a separate spike-and-stance once empirical Aha-moment substrate data is available.
  4. Wide scope: all 6 claims canonicalized as single stance; Claim 4 Aha-moment held as MAGNITUDE-level until R2 bit-exact verification.
  5. Mixed scope: Claims 1+2+3+5+6 canonicalized (well-supported by Spike #138 + Spike #160 + Spike #151); Claim 4 (Aha-moment) held as candidate; sibling stance promoted later if Aha-moment R2 succeeds.

  6. Pathways forward:

  7. Notebook integration: srmech §X (consciousness-ontology chapter) + MFO §Y (cognitive-substrate composition chapter)
  8. R2 dispatches: gated on conductor decision per [[feedback_autonomous_research_followup_authorization]] HIGHEST-vocab-impact rule
  9. Companion research follow-ups: 5 items in spike169 findings §13
